Nurses
The nurses run a general appointments system, together with the chronic disease clinics we provide.
The nurses also provide wound care, well-person checks, new patient checks, follow up contraceptive service, smoking cessation advice, blood pressure monitoring and travel advice.
Additionally, they undertake smear tests, vaccinations, and ear syringing.
Several of the nurse team have further diplomas in minor illness and run clinics every day, One of the nurse team hails from a secondary care background and was an A&E triage nurse.

Health Care Assistant (HCA)
Our HCA runs an appointment service for blood pressure, pulse and urine checks, as well as ECGs and healthy living screening. She also supports our patients with COPD offering annual monitoring of their lung capacity and carries out annual foot checks for our patients with diabetes.
Paramedics
The Elms has their own full time paramedic and a PCN Paramedic. Paramedics work autonomously at an advanced level of practice, using their enhanced clinical assessment and treatment skills, to provide first point of contact for patients presenting with undiagnosed problems relating to minor illness or injury, abdominal pains, asthma concerns and chest pains. The Elms Paramedic also runs Asthma clinics, CHD clinics and Diabetic clinics.
PCN Physician Associate
While not a doctor, physician associates work to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the general medical and/or general practice team. They are trained to perform a number of day-to-day tasks including, taking medical histories, performing examinations, diagnosing illnesses, analysing test results, developing management plans, performing asthma/COPD checks, reviewing medication, performing CHD annual reviews.
PCN First Contact Practitioners
We have 2 first contact practitioners on site and patients with new musculoskeletal (MSK) concerns can book directly into those clinics through the Reception team on 01582 767444 or request an appointment through our online service. First Contact Practitioners are qualified autonomous clinical practitioners who can assess, diagnose, treat and manage MSK problems and similar conditions
PCN First Contact Mental Health Workers
Will see mild to moderate mental health problems/18+/Depression, anxiety, stress, panic, difficulty with emotions, feeling suicidal, feeling overwhelmed. Patients can simply contact the surgery and book directly with a receptionist or use our online econsult on the home page
PCN Clinical Pharmacists
A clinical pharmacist works alongside a multidisciplinary diverse team of health care professionals in general practice and within the primary care network, providing primary support for prescription and medication queries. They are able to undertake clinical medication reviews with patients and produce recommendations for the GPs on prescribing and monitoring. We are lucky to have a highly trained and skilled pharmacy team who have further special interests and qualifications including diabetes.
PCN Social Prescribers
We have 2 social prescribers who can help patients find ways to improve their health and wellbeing by helping them access local services and support groups. Social prescribing works for a wide range of people, including people:
with one or more long-term conditions or
who need support with their mental health or
who are lonely or isolated or
who have complex social needs which affect their wellbeing.
Health Visitors
The health visitors provide support for parents, and child health surveillance. The health visitors are located at the Harpenden Memorial Hospital, Carlton Road Harpenden AL5 4TA Phone: 01582 715675.
Community Midwives
Post natal care takes place by appointment with a doctor. You should an appointment for both you and your baby, when baby is 6 weeks old.
Community Nurses
The district nursing team provide nursing services for those who require services at home. We also work with the Rennie Grove Hospice team and meet regularly. Tel: 01442 890444
Practice Management
Emma is in overall charge of the practice dedicated to the care of 16,800 patients. She is accountable for both patients’ and staff’s care and satisfaction and is happy to be contacted by patients about any concerns or suggestions they may have regarding our services.
Administration
The administrative team is responsible for updating and summarising patients’ medical records, for the repeat prescribing service, for organising the specialised clinics, for ensuring that our IT systems are functioning properly, and undertake regular audits of our achievements.
Reception
The reception team man the reception desk, arrange various appointments, pass on information (such as blood results), explain our services and answer the emergency telephone line.
Secretaries
The secretaries are able to answer patient enquiries concerning communications between the Practice and other agencies, e.g. Hospitals.
