FLU VACCINATIONS 2020

We have hired the Rothamsted Conference Centre for our Flu clinics this year, 4 days over 3 weekends which started last weekend on the 26th September.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE PATIENTS WHO CAME TO HAVE THEIR FLU JABS. Sadly over half those invited did not turn up and others will be invited in their stead for later dates. This may mean that there will not be a vaccine for those that did not come for their appointment and will have to find other sources to have their flu jabs.

We have hired Rothamsted because it is a larger location allowing for social distancing, plenty of parking and overall safe care. Seeing such large numbers can not be done as safely at the practice. These clinics will be invite only and The Elms patients will only be admitted with their barcoded invite letter. This ensures the patient is registered at the Elms, is eligible and confirms consent. Face masks will be requisite. Infrared distance temperature checks will be taken at the entrances. Patients with any Covid symptoms or a temperature will not be permitted. We are looking to invite our extremely at risk shielding patients to the surgery in our protected shielding room. Children having Nasoflu spray will be invited to the practice into designated nurse slots.

As an alternative you are free to go to a local pharmacy for your flu vaccination, they are booking now. Please let us know if you have the jab elsewhere so that we can invite other patients.

You will find more details including the Elms Medical Practice Flu Plan and flu jabs for 50 - 64 year olds under the 'NEWS' tab

NASAL FLU JABS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING

Nasal flu jabs are available for children with a date of birth between 01/09/2016 and 31/08/2018 and for all children in one of the at risk groups up to and including 17 years old.

There are special designated slots for the nasal flu vaccine to enable the practice to continue to operate safely within high infection control guidelines which need to be observed at this time to ensure our patient's safety. These slots are early afternoon everyday. Please call the surgery to book a slot and we thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Flu Campaign

The HVCCG are planning to create some local content to share on social media and they would love to hear from patients. They simply need a couple of sentences about why patients will or have had the flu vaccination and a photo if you wish. If you can help please email communications.hvccg@nhs.net.  They are hoping that this local approach will encourage take up of the flu vaccine.

ON-LINE SERVICES NOTICE 10.9.20

We have moved to a new Clinical Computer System called EMIS. This affects our usual online digital services and necessitates a change for all patients to either register with the new online service called 'Patient Access' and/or download the NHS App. Both are linked to our clinical system and your records. Please look at our Online Services page for more information. If you do not wish to use our online facilities, please continue to request your repeat prescribing in the same way you have done in the past and please continue to call the practice on the phone if you wish to speak to a clinician.

On-line bookable telephone appointments for GPs are available again. If you book a telephone consultation , please be aware that the slot time is not exact and that you will be called within an hour of that allotted time.

We are now part of a Primary Care Network (Harpenden Health PCN) and all practices need to be on the same clinical system, hence the move. A huge upheaval for the practice and staff particularly in light of the COVID Pandemic, however we are excited by this as we believe it will benefit our patients going forward e.g. more after hours appointments available in Harpenden and St Albans for all patients. 111 and Herts urgent Care will be able to book directly into our system.

We thank you for your patience and kindness as we undertake all these vital necessary changes.

PHONE SYSTEM 14.10.20  - This weeks phone call report CLICK HERE

We have been constantly monitoring our phone system as we need to build confidence that we now have a system that works. BT Openreach have now attended the practice and whilst it meant a significant amount of downtime of the phones, they have found and fixed part of the connection to the practice which was faulty. We are hoping this has resolved many, if not all of the problems we have encountered.

We will continue to closely monitor the phone system over the coming days and weeks now that the fault has been fixed.

In the meantime please be assured that the staff are working so hard to deal with what are unprecedented high numbers of calls to the surgery. The queuing system only informs the first 12 people in the queue their position. We have asked that this is raised but they say anymore and it gives false detail as to how quickly calls may be answered. This is because queuing systems only work well for big call centres or switchboards. After the first 12 positions it is set to simply give callers an engaged tone. If this is heard, please try again as it means we have high number of calls coming in at that moment.

Please be aware that we receive 100 - 200 calls an hour and although we have 5 receptionists answering the phones, complex calls can sometimes take longer and can cause significant delays. With such high volumes of calls a wait on the phone for 20 minutes is quite normal, but please be assured that the team are working hard to get to your call as soon as they can. If your call is not urgent why not use our 'ONLINE CONSULT' instead (see top of this page). Its quick and easy to use with useful information and help and has direct access to the surgery. This is monitored during the working week between 09:00 - 16:00

The voice on the phone is a temporary one as Dr Smith will soon be recording the new welcome message.

Option 1 for medical emergencies

Option 2 for routine appointments and general enquiries (and test results after 2pm)

Option 4 for the secretaries including referral and insurance enquiries

To our patients, please accept our sincere apologies for the disruption over the last few weeks. We thank you for your patience.
