How to Access eConsult

eConsult

Managing your health can be stressful and a huge inconvenience – most of us just wish we felt fit and well, all of the time.

eConsult is the most widely used digital triage tool in NHS primary care, built by NHS GPs for NHS patients, designed to enhance patient access, improve practice efficiencies and signpost patients to the right place at the right time for their care. Live in thousands of NHS practices, eConsult gives millions of patients access to their own GP online. It allows you to request a face to face or telephone appointment, order a repeat prescription or more administrative things such as a Med3 sick certificate or blood test results or indeed anything that a patient would ask for on the phone. All identifiable patient medical data passes directly to us at the practice and eConsult will not have access to any of this information.

How Does it work?

If you have a healthcare concern or need to contact the practice for any medical reason, click on the eConsult button and select the right option for you. Fill out the online form, which asks similar questions to what a clinician would ask during an appointment. Every eConsult is then reviewed by our own team and we will be able to decide on the right care for you. We will respond to every eConsult within 24-48 hours. If we feel you need an appointment we will make sure we book one for you.

Why have we started using it?

We have a broad and highly skilled healthcare team, many of whom have specialist training and skills, and are far better placed to deal with many health care concerns, rather than a GP.

eConsult takes a detailed set of information about your symptoms or request, so we can look after patients based on their need, not who can get into the practice first, or ring the practice first. For many patients this will mean they won’t have to come into the practice helping to keep them, and our staff safe and healthy.

Using eConsult is both safe and efficient for patients, it means our patients are able to contact us with their concern at a time that suits them, there’s no hanging on the phone and no need to explain anything personal to a receptionist, plus it means our team receive all the key information upfront to help ensure patients receive the care they need. It means we are able to prioritise the most poorly and help more patients.

It also provides access to masses of useful self-help advice for patients who aren’t sure whether they need to speak to one of our healthcare team yet.

 

Listed below are the various requests you can use the 'I want administrative help' option for, on eConsult:

  • Sick notes - this can be requesting a sick note or checking on the status of an outstanding sick note request. 
  • GP letters 
  • Test results
  • Updating contact information
  • Checking on the status of an outstanding request.
  • General enquiries - for example, medical record requests, Patient Access codes etc. 
  • Specific appointment requests (that do not need to be triaged by a Clinician) - for example, smear tests, immunisations, dressing changes, follow up appointments, phlebotomy clinics at The Harpenden Memorial Hospital etc. 

If you are sending in readings for a review (e.g. blood pressure), please use the 'Start a review' option. This can be found on the 'Contact your doctors to get advice for your problem now' page, near the bottom.

Prescription Requests

This service can be used for prescription requests as well but you may find it easier to email the prescribing team on elms.prescribingteam@nhs.net or simply register on the NHS App to access your repeat prescriptions.


The surgery offers even more online services; either using 'Patient Access' or downloading the NHS App. You need only sign up to one provider to access online services:

Simply come to the surgery with photographic ID to complete a Patient Access request form. You will then be sent a registration letter which contains the necessary pin you will need to register and link to the Practice. Please choose only one method of accessing your data, as having the two apps downloaded may cause IT issues resulting in neither app working.
